New section of the Big Circle Line is launched in the Moscow Metro

On December 7, 2021, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin (via videoconference) and the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin opened a section of the Big Circle Line of the Moscow Metro in the south and west of the city

New section of the Big Circle Line is launched in the Moscow Metro

The section includes the following stations: Terekhovo, Kuntsevskaya, Davydkovo, Aminyevskaya, Michurinsky Prospekt, Prospekt Vernadskogo, Novatorskaya, Vorontsovskaya, Zyuzino and Kakhovskaya.

This launch is a huge event for the city. Since 1935, for the first time 10 stations were opened in Moscow at once. The new section will be more than 21 km long: it is the longest section in the history of the Moscow Metro launched for passengers at the same time.

“The new stations of the Big Circle Line will certainly significantly improve the transport accessibility of a number of districts in the west and south of Moscow for millions of people, trips will become faster, more convenient, radial subway lines will be relieved, the whole rhythm of city life will change in many ways. We can say without exaggeration that the whole rhythm of city life will change”, noted Vladimir Putin.

10 new BCL stations will improve the accessibility of transport for residents of 11 districts of the city with 1.4 million residents. Almost 450 thousand people will have the BCL stations near the house. Thanks to the new metro section, passengers will daily save 35-45 minutes of travel time. Sections of the radial lines inside the BCL will become freer up to 22%, interchange stations with the BCL will become freer up to 27-60% and the roads along the BCL will be unloaded up to 17%.

“Today is a historic day for the city. The President of Russia and the Mayor of Moscow have opened the longest section of the Moscow Metro in its entire history is launched at once. Today, the Aminevskaya station of the future Moscow Central Diameter 4, connected by an underground passage with the ring, was also opened”, said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.

New stations were built taking into account the needs of all passengers. These stations are equipped with elevators and wheelchair platform lifts. The rolling stock of BCL will have only the most modern trains Moskva-2020. Such trains have an enlarged doorway, a wider inter-car transition, as well as USB connectors in each seat, information displays and touch screens, and an automatic air disinfection system.

The Big Circle Line is the largest project implemented with the direct involvement of the Mayor of Moscow. The full launch of the BCL is planned for late 2022 - early 2023, the loop line will have 31 stations. The full launch of the BCL will simplify the movement of 3.3 million Moscow citizens living in 34 districts. The BCL will be the longest metro loop line in the world. Its length is 70 kilometers, which is 3.5 times longer than the existing Line 5 (the Circle Line) and a quarter longer than the Beijing loop line (Line 10) - so far the global leader in terms of length.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin recalled that the Big Circle Line is a key project for the development of the central transport hub of the country. Today, about 60 percent of all Russian passengers pass through the capital. BCL will be able to combine all passenger routes.

“It will be possible to change to 44 different directions from the BCL. These are suburban railways, the MCC and the MCD, and radial metro directions. In other words, this is precisely the key project that, together with the MCC, is, in fact, the new supporting framework of the entire transport system of Moscow and the Moscow transport hub. He is the most difficult and the most in-demand,” said Moscow Mayor. He also added that the project is very difficult because a whole new underground city has been built and continues to be built under Moscow. In total, Moscow Metro will build 150 kilometers of tunnels.
