Available mobility in cities: Knorr-Bremse to equip Alstom’s Citadis tramway platform for another five years

  • Knorr-Bremse has been awarded a 5-year extension of its worldwide brake system framework agreement with Alstom to fit Citadis light rail vehicles (LRVs)

  • From the last quarter of 2020, Knorr-Bremse has started to deliver braking and entrance systems for 69 LRVs to Alstom

Having started in the last quarter of 2020, Knorr-Bremse is supplying braking as well as entrance systems for 69 Citadis LRVs. Most vehicles are destined to operate in Nantes, contributing to more available mobility and higher transport capacities.

“Knorr-Bremse has accompanied Alstom in the Citadis success story as major systems supplier for more than 20 years now. We are happy to extend this long-standing partnership for another five years”, says Mark Cleobury, Member of the Management Board of Knorr- Bremse Systeme für Schienenfahrzeuge GmbH

“By equipping these low-floor vehicles with our systems technologies, we are able to make a decisive contribution to modern, flexible and more available mobility in major of France’s urban centers”, adds Eric Tassilly, Managing Director at Knorr-Bremse France.

Knorr-Bremse will deliver braking as well as entrance systems for a total of 69 LRVs of Alstom’s Citadis platform. All trams will be equipped with service-proven hydraulic braking systems, including carbody components like electro-hydraulic units and electronics, as well as bogie equipment including hydraulic calipers, brake discs and pads, magnetic track brakes and load sensors. As for the entrance systems, which will meet current PRM requirements (People with Reduced Mobility), double-leaf doors will make the low-floor vehicles easily accessible for all passengers, and thereby contribute to more available urban mobility.

49 out of these 69 vehicles will be operated by Semitan in the city of Nantes. The 46-meter- long streetcars with seven car sections each will replace 46 high-floor “Tramway Francais Standard 1” (TFS-1) streetcars from the 1990s, while at the same time increasing transport capacity in the sixth largest city in France.

Citadis is one of the main Light Rail Vehicle platforms with more than 2,900 trams in operation in over 20 countries around the world. Since 1998, more than 1,600 Citadis trams have been equipped with Knorr-Bremse technologies.
