SNCF Réseau and Vossloh collaborate to upgrade the underground railway infrastructure at Paris Gare du Nord, one of Europe's busiest rail hubs. The project addresses severe spatial constraints within the tunnel environment, strict possession window limits, and the operational requirement to maintain network availability during active passenger service. Conventional track replacement methods are unfeasible due to limited physical access and the need to prevent network disruption.
Technical Solution and Division of Responsibilities
Vossloh Switch Systems France designs and manufactures five large-scale scissors crossovers tailored to the compact geometry of the tunnel. SNCF Réseau oversees network integration, possession scheduling, and track-side engineering coordination.
The technical architecture incorporates a 50D switch-rail profile, metal injection molded steel sleepers at the first attack, Cogislide systems, and prototype crossing configurations. In the central crossing area, 6 m timber sleepers are engineered to handle complex mechanical loads within a restricted footprint. The crossovers provide bidirectional track transfer capabilities, enabling rapid rerouting during service disruptions.
Deployment and Logistics
Due to physical tunnel limitations preventing complete pre-assembly transport, the installation relies on a panelised modular approach. Components are pre-assembled and electrically cabled in manufacturing facilities across Reichshoffen and Fère-en-Tardenois, with manganese crossings sourced from Outreau.
Logistics utilize tilting wagons for rail-based delivery from production sites directly to Paris, minimizing road transport requirements. On-site installation uses marked sleeper packages and crane placement to enable rapid mechanical reassembly during abbreviated possession windows, reducing track-side labor hours.
Operational Impact
The deployment ensures high structural reliability and operational flexibility under high traffic loads. Panelised pre-assembly and rail-based logistics reduce carbon emissions associated with transport while ensuring compliance with stringent railway engineering standards.
