Alstom has secured a five-year contract extension to operate and maintain the automated people mover (APM) system at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The Innovia APM system, known as the Plane Train, operates within a 2.8-mile underground guideway connecting airport terminals and concourses. Running continuously, the system enables rapid passenger transfers, maintaining transit times of only a few minutes between terminals.

In 2025, the system transported approximately 95 million passengers, reflecting the scale and operational intensity required for airport mobility infrastructure. Continuous operation—24 hours a day, year-round—places high demands on system reliability, maintenance, and energy supply.

Scope of Operations and Maintenance
The extended agreement covers full system operations, including vehicle control, power and electrification systems, guideway and rolling stock maintenance, and cleaning of tunnels and passenger areas.

Such integrated service models are designed to ensure consistent system availability and performance. Long-term contracts also support workforce continuity, with approximately 140 technical staff involved in system operation and maintenance.

Capacity Expansion and Fleet Modernisation
In parallel with the operations contract, infrastructure upgrades and fleet expansion projects are underway. The introduction of additional vehicles is expected to increase system capacity by enabling higher train frequency along the guideway.
