Amtrak is advancing a modernisation programme across the Northeast Corridor focused on renewing rolling stock and upgrading ageing infrastructure to improve service reliability and operational performance.
High-speed NextGen Acela trainsets, built in the United States, are now in service, while new Airo trainsets are scheduled to begin arriving in 2026. These fleet upgrades are intended to replace older equipment and support more consistent intercity operations.
In parallel, multiple infrastructure projects are underway along the corridor, targeting critical assets such as track, power systems, tunnels, bridges, and stations. Many of these components date back decades and represent long-standing constraints on capacity and reliability.
By combining fleet renewal with infrastructure investment, the programme aims to reduce delays, improve journey-time predictability, and enhance the overall passenger experience on the busiest passenger rail route in the United States.
