Finch West Light Rail in Toronto begins operation with Sener’s prominent contribution

Toronto celebrated the official launch of the Finch West LRT, the new Line 6 of the Greater Toronto Area’s light rail network. This milestone marks the region’s first-ever LRT line to enter service and represents a major advance in urban mobility, providing a seamless connection with the existing subway network. With an investment of €1.7 billion, the project stands as a significant reference in the Canadian transit sector and showcases Sener’s strong contribution. Following this inauguration, Sener has now participated in more than 100 kilometres of urban transit lines currently in operation across Canada.

The Finch West LRT extends 10.3 km along Finch Avenue West in northwest Toronto, linking Finch West station on Subway Line 1 with Humber College. The line features 16 surface stops, two underground stations, and a maintenance and storage facility. The full end-to-end journey takes approximately 38 minutes, with service every 5–7 minutes during peak periods and 7–10 minutes off-peak — offering residents a fast, modern, and efficient mobility option. The project has been delivered for Metrolinx/Infrastructure Ontario, the agencies leading the modernization and expansion of regional transport.

Sener has played a key role by contributing its extensive expertise and delivering innovative design and engineering solutions throughout all phases of development. Working closely with Arup, Sener supported the construction consortium comprising Aecon, Dragados, and Dufferin.

Its scope covered the full design of the line up to 100% completion, including traction power and overhead catenary, signalling and tramway control systems, control centres, safety and communications systems, track design and alignment, and the configuration of the maintenance and storage facilities. Sener also led the technical certification of the entire scope during construction, as well as the testing and commissioning activities — both essential to ensuring the line entered service meeting the highest standards of safety, performance, and reliability.
