Union Pacific is bringing automotive-style camera innovation to the rails, giving train crews a high-tech, real-time view of their surroundings to enhance safety and precision.
At its Livonia, Louisiana yard, new locomotive-mounted cameras stream high-definition near, far and 180-degree panoramic views, eliminating structural blind spots and helping crews make confident, informed decisions.
“The system blends simplicity with sophistication,” said Brian Partlow, director, Tech. Built-in safeguards verify camera performance, while latency detection alerts crews instantly if the video feed slows.

This is only the start. Union Pacific is developing next-generation features such as machine vision to detect people, vehicles or obstacles and automatically trigger a stop, along with collision avoidance systems for locomotives and track equipment.
