Hitachi Rail has been named as Greater Toronto's Top Employer, in Canada's Top 100 Employers competition, the definitive annual list of the country's best workplaces. Hitachi Rail's office in North York employs more than 1,000 people and is home to the global engineering excellence centre for the Urban Rail Signalling business.

Hitachi Rail's SelTrac™ Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) solution, invented in Ontario, helps urban public transport operators to carry three billion passengers every year. The technology is deployed on complex existing metro networks in New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, and also helped cities build new networks in Dubai, Doha, Santiago, Vancouver, Kuala Lumpur, and Seoul. Hitachi Rail provides signalling systems for more than 100 metro lines in over 40 major cities, including projects in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal.
