The number of the harmful substances’ emissions has reduced to 14 thousand tons per year after the launch of the MCD project

The rail transport is the most eco-friendly transport in the world. All countries are focused on its development. In Russia, the share of the railway transport in environmental pollution is less than 1%. The Moscow Transport adheres to the Urban Health approach, which gives priority to the people’s health and well-being in the urban environment development.

The number of the harmful substances’ emissions has reduced to 14 thousand tons per year after the launch of the MCD project

The Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) is the largest Moscow railway transport project, which has had a positive impact on the Moscow citizens. Its implementation encouraged citizens to move from private cars to public transport, thus unloading the capital adjacent highways by 20%.

According to Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport, in order to interest drivers to move from personal cars to the MCD the Moscow Mayor set the task of implementing attractive tariffs and creating convenient interchanges on the existing and prospective diameters.

The routes of the already existing diameters (MCD 1 and MCD 2) were laid down long before the MCD launch. They were used by the city electric train. Old trains, complicated navigation, inconvenient timetable and no integration into the entire urban transport system. This did not correspond to the Moscow and the Moscow region pace of development

At the moment, two diameters have already been launched – MCD 1 and MCD 2, three more diameters are planned – the MCD 3, MCD 4 and MCD 5. Stations are being built and reconstructed on the existing and prospective diameters (20 stations since 2019), which become the European level urban or suburban stations. Hubs are also being built with the convenient interchanges to various types of transport, allowing passengers to create new, fast and convenient routes. Since 2019, the MCD has transported more than 280 million passengers.

«Thanks to the launch of the two diameters the number of the harmful substances emissions into the atmosphere is reduced to 14 thousand tons in Moscow annually. The same is expected after the launch of the third diameter. According to our projections, in the first year of the MCD 3 operation more than 6.6 million drivers who chose it instead of a private car will be transported by the MCD. As a result, the number of harmful substances emitted into the atmosphere will be reduced by 36,000 tons per year. This means that the environmental situation in the capital will change for the better and that the roads in Moscow will be unloaded», – noted Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport

The MCD is an above-ground metro which is considered an analogue of the Crossrail in London and the RER in Paris. It allows passengers to travel from the suburbs to the city center and back. Passengers can interchange to the metro, the Moscow Central Circle (MCC) and the surface transport. The MCD consists of 60 stations with 21 interchanges. The launch of the future MCD 3 is planned in 2023. The new Moscow Central Diameter will include 43 stations and its length will be 82 km. The MCD 4 is scheduled to be launched in 2023. There will be 18 transit stations with 35 options for interchanges to the metro, the Moscow Central Circle and other diameters. With the MCD 4, passengers will be able to reach 7 Moscow terminals without interchanges. The MCD 5 launch is planned on the 2025.
